Overview

The New York City Marathon began on September 13, 1970, with a four-lap course around Central Park, with a registration fee of $ 1 per person and a budget of $ 1,000.

Of the 127 registered runners, 55 finished.

Course

The New York City Marathon is famous for its course that winds its way through all five boroughs of New York City: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Manhattan .

Here’s a breakdown of the journey:

  • The race starts on Staten Island and runners cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. This is often considered the most exciting part of the course with incredible views of the city skyline.

  • Runners then make their way through Brooklyn, Queens and into the Bronx. This part of the course is known for its diverse neighborhoods and enthusiastic crowds.
